Important Information for Your Consideration:

A very important aspect which decides your espresso machine longevity is water quality.

The USGS (United States Geological Survery), an official government agency provided website broadly defines water hardness as the following here:

"...The simple definition of water hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Hard water is high in dissolved minerals, largely calcium and magnesium. You may have felt the effects of hard water, literally, the last time you washed your hands. Depending on the hardness of your water, after using soap to wash you may have felt like there was a film of residue left on your hands. In hard water, soap reacts with the calcium (which is relatively high in hard water) to form "soap scum". When using hard water, more soap or detergent is needed to get things clean, be it your hands, hair, or your laundry..."

"...Have you done a load of dishes in the dishwasher, taken out the glasses, and noticed spots or film on them? This is more hard-water residue—not dangerous, but unsightly. Many industrial and domestic water users are concerned about the hardness of their water. When hard water is heated, such as in a home water heater, solid deposits of calcium carbonate can form. This scale can reduce the life of equipment, raise the costs of heating the water, lower the efficiency of electric water heaters, and clog pipes. And, yes, mineral buildup will occur in your home coffee maker too[...]"

"...Hardness is caused by compounds of calcium and magnesium, and by a variety of other metals. General guidelines for classification of waters are: 0 to 60 mg/L (milligrams per liter) as calcium carbonate is classified as soft; 61 to 120 mg/L as moderately hard; 121 to 180 mg/L as hard; and more than 180 mg/L as very hard..."

Please understand the following:

If the water used is too hard, its presence will cause the machine to develop limescale deposits, and buildups of limescale, which is one of the top reasons for operating problems and failure. Limescale deposits can easily obstruct the flow of liquid and liquid solubles throughout a machine, causing significant damage.

If water is too soft, or too purified, such as distilled water, its presence can cause the machine to overfill itself, as these machines are well documented to require minerals present in water for volume detector assemblies to work properly to measure water volume throughout the unit.

Ideal water composition for espresso and coffee machines usage generally is softened water, which consists of about 50ppm in hardness, or less.

Please be advised that equipment users must follow manufacturers instructions while descaling the machine.

These instructions can be found in the user's manual which is included in every new-in-box purchase, or online via a manufacturer's website.

If you have any trouble at all finding a user's manual, please reach out to a manufacturerer's contact page to receive a document related to the general or advanced user's manual regarding your coffee equipment.

In general, if the water used in the espresso machine is kept at a hardness level of 50ppm or less, descaling won't be often needed except as described by the guidance of each equipment's manufacturer's user manual.

A warranty usually does not cover espresso machine or its parts failures (such as heating elements, water level probes, sensors, pumps, et cetera) caused by hard water usage and failure to run descaling functions at regular intervals when hard water is used.

This informational guidance disclosure also applies to warranties of sales of machines and equipment sold by our business, Espresso RMI LLC.
